Our STEAM Curriculum

Inspiring innovation, creativity and critical thinking through hands-on learning

Overview

Our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) curriculum inspires questioning, creativity and problem-solving through hands-on learning across Key Stage 2.

In Year 3, pupils explore light, structure and pattern by creating kaleidoscopes, designing strong model bridges, and experimenting with cyanotype sun prints. In Year 4, learning becomes more investigative and user-focused, as children build floating sculptures to test buoyancy, construct catapults to measure forces and motion, and redesign everyday objects such as forks to support people with arthritis. Year 5 pupils deepen their understanding through exciting challenges including designing moon landers to protect astronauts, observing capillary action through ‘bleeding blossoms’, and creating marbled prints while studying properties of materials. By Year 6, children apply their knowledge to more complex systems, building pulleys and gears, constructing geodesic domes for strength and efficiency, and engineering creative ‘paint explosion’ devices to explore energy and pattern.

Alongside this, our STEM Racing initiative gives pupils the opportunity to design, build and race miniature vehicles, developing teamwork, engineering skills and resilience in a competitive, real-world context.
