Intent
What do we aim to do?Implementation
How do we achieve our goals? The PSHRE and RSE curriculum is planned and taught using the Coram Life Education SCARF framework and meets all DfE requirements for statutory RSE. It is mapped to the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study and organised around six key areas: Me and My Relationships, Valuing Difference, Keeping Safe, Rights and Respect, Being My Best, and Growing and Changing. These areas are delivered progressively, with each broadly covering a half-term and being revisited and developed across all year groups. PSHRE and RSE learning is also embedded across the wider curriculum rather than being limited to dedicated lesson time. For example, personal safety is reinforced through computing, particularly in relation to online safety. Planning is carefully sequenced so that knowledge, skills, and understanding build year on year, supported by whole-school progression documents. Vocabulary is also explicitly planned and developed, as outlined in the ‘Vocabulary Across All Four Year Groups’ document. The curriculum supports links to British Values and SMSC development (spiritual, moral, social, and cultural), with lessons often enhanced through key events, celebrations, and campaigns such as Lunar New Year, Democracy Week, and Remembrance Day. Pupil voice and leadership are central to provision at LJS. The school has an active School Council and EcoAmbassador Council, with representatives elected democratically. In Year 6, pupils also take part in House Captain elections, including writing and delivering speeches to their peers, providing an early experience of democratic processes. Anti-bullying remains a priority, with each year group contributing to the school’s anti-bullying pledge, reinforced through lessons, assemblies, and daily school life. Pupils are also supported through wellbeing-focused initiatives, including support from the Emotional Wellbeing Lead, mindfulness sessions and roles such as Wellbeing Warriors, who support peers at breaktimes and help promote positive relationships.
Impact
How will we know we have achieved our aims?Alongside the British Values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, the rule of law, and individual liberty, pupils at LJS will be fully aware of and able to demonstrate the LJS Values of Tolerance, Resilience, Understanding, and Excellence, both during their time at school and beyond. Pupils will develop a healthy outlook towards school, with attendance in line with national expectations and behaviour that is consistently exemplary. They will be supported in developing high levels of self-esteem, self-confidence, and emotional wellbeing. Pupils will gain a clear understanding of what makes healthy relationships and will be prepared for the changes associated with puberty and adolescence. They will also learn to make healthy lifestyle choices both in school and in the wider world, including a secure understanding of the risks associated with unhealthy substances by the end of Key Stage 2. Overall, pupils will be well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life in modern Britain.
