Mathematics

In Maths, pupils develop a secure understanding of number, shape, measurement and data through practical learning, problem-solving and daily arithmetic practice.

About the Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

Intent

We aim to:
  • Equip all of our pupils with the life skills they need to be able to flourish in the real world and promote a love of maths.
  • Ensure that, regardless of starting point in KS2, every pupil has access to a rich and meaningful mathematics education.
  • Immerse our pupils in a language rich mathematical environment. We want our pupils to leave us with the confidence to talk maths, do maths and apply maths to their everyday lives.
  • Teach through real life contexts to enable pupils to apply their understanding, reason about maths, problem solve and make connections across the subject and the wider curriculum.

Implementation

How do we achieve our aims?

Our Curriculum:

As part of our ‘teaching for mastery’ journey we are using White Rose Maths as a supporting curriculum document - alongside NCETM materials, NRICH and Rising Stars to name a few. . Planning is completed across a year group; all pupils in that year group have access to the same content at roughly the same time. WRM is a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and help pupils develop confidence in maths. Staff have received training from the maths lead who has worked extensively with the NCETM, MaST and The Yorkshire and Humber Maths Hub. As a school, we are part of the ‘Maths Mastery’ program - we are in our third year of working with the Hub (our sustaining year). We believe that teachers should be pro-active in their own pedagogy and encourage all staff to use the National College for online CPD as well as take part in Maths Hub which 5 members of staff have accessed this year. Staff are confident and feel empowered to deliver the maths curriculum, knowing that they have the resources and support they need to achieve this. Teaching sequences are planned based on small steps to ensure a good level of coherence, understanding, application of understanding and transference of skills to a range of mathematic problems and contexts. We have mapped out our own long term plans, supported by White Rose, for each year group but based on what works best for our pupils. We actively encourage staff to use materials from NRICH and Rising Stars Problem Solving to ensure that pupils have a rich ‘diet’ of mathematical problems, including extended problem solving opportunities.

Maths Lessons:

Every one of our maths lessons is based on the principals that all children can achieve. Pupils at Lindley Junior School are taught in mixed ability class groups, with all of them accessing the same learning*. This allows all pupils to be exposed to the same content and offered the same opportunities, rather than placing a ceiling on children’s learning. Pupils are then given tasks to enrich and stretch this learning in the form of ‘challengers’ to further independently extend pupils. Those who may need extra help are supported through scaffolding, such as using concrete manipulatives or by requiring teacher/ LSA support.
No pupils are given different objectives unless they have an EHCP/SEND, in this case pupils may follow a individualised curriculum which best reflects their specific needs.
* There may be occasions where children are fluidly grouped for a short period of time to allow specific misconceptions to be addressed.

  • Each lesson begins with a revisit of previous learning (retrieval activity) This enables pupils to exercise their working memory and to better retain facts taught previously. This may take the form of a ‘fluent in 5’ arithmetic activity or a ‘flashback 4’ with factual questions from last week/ last lesson/ previous topic.
  • The new lesson content is then introduced in the form of small steps and a ‘ping pong’ style session. There are opportunities for guided practice and independent practice. Concrete materials are on hand if pupils wish to use them. They make that choice themselves to enable them to own their own learning.
  • The small steps of the lesson mean that pupils are all brought along together as a whole class.
  • The independent tasks are then explained and the pupils complete their work at the level that suits them, starting on different questions depending on ability/confidence. The tasks are high ceiling, low threshold, so that everyone can access the first questions and then go as far through them as they can, completing the challenger activi-ties where possible.
  • Teachers active mark through the lesson providing immediate feedback and intervention where needed. LSAs do not always sit with a group/ pupil as we aim to ensure that all pupils develop independence. So once they have introduced and supported certain pupils, they may leave them for independent practice; visiting them later to monitor progress.
  • LSAs may provide immediate feedback to pupils and the teacher where needed.
  • Mini plenaries are used effectively to address common misconceptions identified by active marking.
  • Our plenaries are usually in the form of whole class reasoning or ‘true or false’ style questions to enable the whole class to experience this level of reasoning.
  • Pupils self-assess their work based against the lesson outcome(s) - they use the RAG system.
  • All teachers assess and RAG pupil’s work using a stamper and make notes on planning to inform future lessons and identify who may need reactive intervention or who may need to work in a smaller group the next day. We do not always provide written feedback to pupils in books or expect this from staff and research shows that ver-bal feedback at the time of the misconception is more beneficial to move learning forward. Pupils are encouraged to self-mark where appropriate and are expected to correct their mistakes where they see a (c) indicating a correction is needed (see marking and feedback policy).

Assessment:

  • Teachers actively assess daily and provide immediate feedback to move learning forwards.
  • End of unit assessments are carried out from the White Rose scheme and supplemented with other activities where needed.
  • Our bespoke assessment system is then updated on a termly basis to keep track of pupil attainment.
  • We complete NFER assessments as a baseline in Autumn, at the begin-ning of the Spring Term and the end of Summer Term (apart from Year 6 pupils who take their SATs) this information feeds into our robust assessment process to inform/support our teacher assess-ment judgements.
  • Termly moderation is carried out during whole school staff meetings and during book looks.
  • The maths lead: hosts in regular maths pupil voice meetings; triangu-lates results to assess teacher judgements and reports on maths to governors.
  • Book looks are carried out termly by the maths lead and support put in place, for any staff members who need it, in the form of coaching.

Impact

How will we know we have achieved our aims?
  • Pupils are enthused about their mathematical learning. They talk about maths positively and are able to articulate their thinking using correct mathematical terminology.
  • Pupils relish challenge and enjoy getting ‘stuck in’ to a problem—they can make connections to previous learning and have a ‘can do’ attitude to problem solving and reasoning.
  • Pupils can find more than one way to solve a calculation; they look for patterns within the numbers, finding the most efficient way to calculate for themselves, whilst appreciating there is often more than one way to solve something.
  • At the end of KS2 we have progress and attainment measures that are ‘significantly above average’ and in the top 20% (IDSR for 2022 results).
